Sea Duck Decoys – Imperative for a Quality Hunt

March 7, 2010

Duck hunting in the sea is just like duck hunting anywhere else in the sense that you need to set up a natural looking duck environment if you want to have maximum success. That’s why it’s important to invest in a few sea duck decoys.

Now, if you’re new to duck hunting, you may be wondering what on earth you would want to use a duck decoy for. Well, it turns out that ducks are easily fooled by things that look like ducks. They will think that a decoy is a real duck, so they will feel inclined to swim around it without suspecting anything. Thus, duck decoys give you a way to lure ducks into your preferred shooting spot.

There are different types of duck decoys, and you will need to choose a set of decoys that will look somewhat like the ducks you plan on hunting. So, if you’re planning on hunting sea ducks, then you will need to get some sea duck decoys, or at the very least, decoys that look something like those types of ducks.

However, it is common to use different types of duck decoys at the same time, as this will give your environment a more natural look and so it will be more inviting to nearby ducks.

There is something to be wary of if you are planning on doing your hunting in sea water, and that is the wave height. Ducks prefer to swim in flat water, so try to pick a time and location that will have relatively flat water hunting conditions.

Once you’ve chosen a good spot, you will need to carefully plan out how to place your decoy ducks. There are many different opinions on what it the best way to spread out your decoys, but it is generally agreed upon that you should have some decoys close to your hunting blind, and some decoys out in open water. The reason for having sea duck decoys out in the open is that they will be more clearly visible by ducks flying overhead. Decoys are no good if ducks can’t see them. So the open water decoys are good to lure your ducks into your hunting area.

The close-range decoys may not be so visible from the air, but they will lure the ducks closer to you once your open water decoys have brought the ducks down to the water.
