Patio Pavers or Flagstone | Patio Flooring Ideas

March 1, 2010

When trying to decide upon the best type of material or application of your patio flooring, the overall design of your patio and the way you will use it will help determine the best material to use.  For example, if your patio cover plans call for a custom designed pergola and winding pathway around a garden or landscaped pool area, you might prefer a more natural or rustic looking patio.  If your plans call for a more modern and sleek looking patio, then a polished or stained concrete patio might be a better choice.  It is a great idea to see some examples of each application and then decide.

If you plan on using your patio around a Jacuzzi or hot tub, then the water factor is a critical thing to consider.  Water and a smooth concrete slab are not a good mix.  For applications like this, patio pavers make a much better choice.  Because of how they are made, the pavers have a more porous service and can absorb water more easily, allowing you to have firm footing.  Another great choice would be flagstone.  This creates a more upscale look if done right and can really enhance the natural feeling of your patio space.  A flagstone patio can really bring the landscape features into your patio space.

One benefit of using pavers is that they are easy to install and are relatively inexpensive.  You can even tackle this project yourself if you are looking for a DIY project.  You can also install a flagstone patio, but you need to be more careful as the flagstone needs to be more evenly leveled and cared for.  The novice should leave a large patio installation of flagstone to the professionals.  With a paver installation, there is a simple process to follow.  If you can follow it, you will have a greater ability to replace broken or stained individual pavers.  You cannot do this with flagstone or a poured slab as easily.
