Outdoor Lighting with Motion Detectors

June 6, 2010

If you are considering buying a new lighting fixture for your home exterior than you might want to consider buying one with a motion detector. Motion detectors are frequently used on driveways and walkways, they are great to increase the safety and security around your property and they are also great to save money on your electricity bill. But before you buy an outdoor lighting lamp with integrated motion detector you want to be sure you buy one that is suitable for your location.

Motion detectors are a great way to increase security on your walkway or driveway. They will alarm you when friend or foe approaches your home and this is something that burglars really dislike. They rather choose a home that is not properly lit and where there are no motion detectors that will notice their presence.

A motion connector controls when your lamp will light up based on the motion that is around the detector. The sensitivity of the detector is an important aspect to take in mind. A detector that is too sensitive will light up too fast, which is not good for the longevity of the lamp and your electricity bill. That is why you want a lamp where you can adjust the sensitivity. This is especially necessary when your walkway borders a busy pedestrian road where lots of people pass by.

Another consideration to keep in mind is the angle the detector detects motion. Some detectors will only work when motion is directly in front of them while others will work with a larger angle. Your probably don’t want an outdoor lighting fixture than only works when traffic approaches in front of it but also when it arrives from the side. That is why you want to look for a fixture with a larger angle of sensitivity which can also be adjusted.
