Bathroom lighting isn’t brain surgery, but many people make some common mistakes when they’re upgrading theirs. Knowing the problems that others have will help you make a better decision when upgrading yours. This post will highlight some of these mistakes and how to get around them.
The most common mistake that people make is not matching their bathroom lights to the theme of the rest of their home. Some are under the assumption that is bathroom is just a bathroom and should be decorated as such. This makes some really lame bathrooms that feel like they belong in a totally different house! Instead, carry the home’s theme right into the bathroom so that everything jives. If you have modern lights in your kitchen, use modern lights in the bathroom.
Another common mistake is having bathroom vanity lights that are way too bright for the small space. A bathroom shouldn’t feel like an interrogation room, it should be inviting, and many people have vanity lights that have too many fixtures on them. This is easily toned down with lower wattage lights or a dimmer switch, but should be prevented from the get go. Use your current light fixture as a gauge, if it’s too bright get a smaller one, if it’s too dark get a light fixture that’s only a little bit bigger.
My favorite mistake is when the “curtains don’t match the drapes!” That means having gold brass faucets and nickel light fixtures. You might want to add a little variety to your bathroom, but there are much classier ways to do it! It’s really hard to pull off this type of design faux pas and get away with it. Put simply, have all of your bathroom’s fixtures match!
Improving your bathroom lighting isn’t tough and when you learn from others mistakes you will be much more successful. Of course it’s your house and you can do whatever you want, but some basic rules of style and design should be considered!
