Discussing Hemorrhoids with Your Doctor

February 1, 2010

Hemorrhoids and hemorrhoid treatment are subjects not typically talked about in polite company.  However, if you suffer from hemorrhoids you will need to have a frank conversation with your doctor and probably have to be subjected to an anal exam consisting of either a quick visual check or something more obtrusive like a colonoscopy. Although a colonoscopy may seem like a lot to go through just for hemorrhoids it is necessary to rule out more serious conditions which have some of the same symptoms. Hemorrhoids, sometimes referred to as piles, are stressed veins in the anal cavity due usually to straining while using the bathroom. Most people first realize that they have a hemorrhoid when they begin experiencing symptoms such as swelling, pain, itching or bleeding. Besides straining during bowel movements, other causes of hemorrhoids are aging, pregnancy, obesity and genetic factors.

Hemorrhoids are usually not serious and as long as the symptoms are manageable most people will not need surgery. Only in the most serious cases is surgery required. In many cases one of the first things to be considered is how some minor changes in your daily habits can truly have a great impact on the hemorrhoids and provide the easiest and most natural hemorrhoid treatment. Watching and altering your diet is of primary significance. Adding more fiber to your diet and eliminating red meats, cheeses and soft drinks is a great place to start altering your diet. In addition, the daily taking of warm baths, if possible several times a day can offer significant hemorrhoid relief and this combined with changing your diet can help eliminate hemroids for good.

So, although hemroids can be embarrassing it’s important to get an exam and begin treating your symptoms and preventing further hemorrhoid flare ups so that your condition does not get worse.
