Camping with Kids

July 16, 2010

One great thing about camping is that it’s an outdoor activity that the whole family can enjoy. Some of the best childhood memories are formed in the wilderness on trips with everyone is crammed into a huge tent. There are so many things you can do in the woods that each personality is accommodated, and of course everyone loves the taste of campfire BBQ. So if you are looking to give your children some valuable camping memories, here are some simple tips to keep in mind.

You will want to ensure that you are fully stocked for your family camping outing. Among the most important camping supplies will be your food cooler which should be packed full of block ice to keep everything refrigerated. A great way to get your kids involved is to have them help with stocking the cooler and making a list of everything that’s inside. You should also take the time to teach them food safety and let them know how essential it is to refrigerate and cook food properly. In the field, you want to keep your supplies organized and well contained, and some families bring along separate cheap camping tents for this purpose.

On any camping trip there will be many moments where you can point out the importance of respecting nature. So teach your children to stay on marked paths so as not to disturb the plants or wildlife. You may also want to let your kids know about campfire safety and tell them all of the bad things that can happen if campfires are not kept in check. Any given campsite will also have unwritten rules regarding etiquette that your children might want to know about. As you can see, there are so many teachable moments while camping and the activity has a great educational component as well. So gather up those kids and take them outdoors for a camping experience that they will never forget.
