5 Benefits of Using Ginger

June 10, 2010

Ginger has been used for centuries as a spice in food dishes, as a favorite tea in many cultures, and also as a natural remedy for varying conditions.  In western culture, ginger is especially known for the tasty soda ginger ale.  Ginger ale has been part of Thanksgiving or Christmas in my family for years as a marinade of sorts on ham.  This spice is very helpful in quite a few ways.  Here are five benefits of using ginger.

Ginger can help ease morning sickness. According to a report by the Journal of Alternative and Complimentary Medicine in 2009 on a study performed to find the effects of ginger on morning sickness, test subjects who took ginger supplements reported an eighty-five percent decrease in nausea and vomiting.  This was twenty six percent higher than those who only took the placebo.  This study acknowledges the long held belief among many people that ginger is effective as a remedy for nausea.

Ginger also relieves flu nausea symptoms. As with the report on morning sickness, ginger also helps with nausea associated with the flu.  How many can remember when your mother gave you ginger ale to help combat nausea during your bouts with the flu.  I prefer to use organic ginger ale because it is much healthier for you than regular ginger ale.

Ginger is known to soothe fiery heartburn symptoms.   Ginger is one of the best cures for heartburn.  You can chew on ginger candies or drink ginger ale or tea or chew on the ginger root itself to get the benefit of this heartburn remedy.  Ginger helps with digestion and that is the main benefit for using it with heartburn.

This all around spice can also relieve motion sickness.  I get very car sick and have used this method and it has worked for me.  One of the benefits of using ginger for motion sickness is that some of the over the counter medications cause drowsiness.  Ginger does not have this side effect and you still get relief.  You can carry a couple ginger treats if you are going on a boat or plane and you have a history of motion sickness.

These are just a few of the benefits of using ginger.  From relieving morning sickness to being one of the best heartburn home remedies, this tasty hot spice can relieve these uncomfortable symptoms.
